Sharing price · Private standard

Cheaper doesn't mean thinner mattresses.

Many travellers worry that a budget join group trek means cheaper gear and less food. With us it doesn't. The only real difference from a private trek is that you share the trail – and the bill – with a few other friendly hikers.

The guide, porters and cook cost us almost the same whether we take two people or a full group of eight – the maximum allowed by the national park. Sharing those costs, and keeping only a small profit for ourselves, is what makes our prices possible.

Clean Rinjani · Responsible join group trekking

A budget Rinjani join group trek that still pays to keep the mountain clean

Our Mount Rinjani sharing group prices are low and our profit per trekker is small. But Rinjani is our home and our workplace. Plastic bottles, snack wrappers and trash left at the camps and around Segara Anak lake hurt the mountain we love – so even on a cheap Rinjani join group trek, we give something back.

USD 3 for every guide and porter who carries trash down

Every guide and porter on our join group treks who carries trash down the mountain receives a USD 3 reward from us. Not only the trash from our own group – also the trash that other hikers have left behind on the trail and at the crater rim. The same reward for guides and porters, on every trek.

A small note – and our apology

We can pay this trash reward on join groups of at least 4 trekkers. With fewer people it is not possible for us: our sharing group package is priced so low that the profit is very small, and the reward would cost more than the trip earns. We hope you understand what we mean.

How you can help on your Rinjani trek

Keep your wrappers and bottles in your bag, leave nothing behind at camp, and if you see trash on the way down, show it to your guide. Small things, done by every trekker, keep Rinjani beautiful for the next join group.

See exactly where your join group will walk and sleep

Before you book a Rinjani join group trek, you should know where you are going. This Mount Rinjani route map shows the three official trails – Sembalun, Senaru and Torean – with the crater rim camps, Segara Anak lake, the hot springs and the summit.

Every sharing group trek on this website follows these trails, inside Mount Rinjani National Park. No hidden shortcuts, no surprise routes: what you see on the map is what you trek.

How to read the map

  • Sembalun (east): open savanna and ridges to the Sembalun crater rim – the start of every summit trek.
  • Senaru (north): rainforest to the Senaru crater rim – for the 2D1N crater rim trek and as the exit of Sembalun – Senaru treks.
  • Torean: the valley and canyon from the lake down to Torean village – the exit of our Sembalun – Torean treks.

Sembalun Route

Summit 3,726 m

Wide open savanna and long ridges with big views all day. Sembalun is the starting point for every summit trek and the route we use on all summit packages.

Senaru route gate, start of the Mount Rinjani Senaru trail

Senaru Route

Crater rim & lake views

A shady climb through tropical rainforest with monkeys and birdsong, ending at the Senaru crater rim with a classic view over Segara Anak lake and the small volcano inside.

Torean route gate, Mount Rinjani Torean trail

Torean Route

Valleys, canyons & waterfalls

The wild one: a dramatic descent from the lake through a deep valley with warm river streams, canyon walls and waterfalls. We use it as the exit route on our Sembalun – Torean packages.

FAQ

Questions about the join group trek

What is a Rinjani join group trek?

A join group trek (also called a sharing group or open trip) means you trek Mount Rinjani together with other travellers who booked the same route and date. The guide, porters and cooking team are shared by the group, so the cost per person is much lower than a private trip.

Do you offer private treks?

No. Trekking Backpacker runs full sharing / join group trips only. That is how we keep the price low. If you come with friends or family you simply join the group together.

What is the difference between Trek Only and Standard?

Trek Only (from USD 118) is for travellers who already rented a motorbike and ride to Senaru or Sembalun themselves – everything on the mountain is included, but no transport and no hotel. The Standard sharing group package adds pick-up within our transport area in Lombok, 1 night hotel in Senaru before the trek and drop-off to Bangsal harbour, Senggigi or Mataram; the price per person depends on the group size.

Is the service worse on the cheaper Trek Only price?

No. Trek Only guests get exactly the same guide, porters, tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, toilet tent and meals as guests on the Standard package. You only save the cost of transport and the hotel because you come to the village yourself.

Is the equipment and food the same as on a private trek?

Yes. Weatherproof tents, a thick mattress, a sleeping bag, a toilet tent and freshly cooked meals with fruit and drinking water – the same standard you would expect on a private trip. We save money by sharing costs and keeping a small profit, not by cutting gear or food.

How many people are in one join group?

A join group has a maximum of 8 trekkers. This is a rule of the Mount Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani / TNGR), not something we made ourselves. Bigger bookings are split into more than one group, each with its own guide. During the trekking season groups depart almost every day – send us your date on WhatsApp and we will confirm your place.
